          In this age of pandemic, retail workers and fast-food and food-delivery persons, among others, are being hailed as heroes, second only to doctors, nurses, first responders and other health care personnel. And rightfully so.

          Among the people being wrongly maligned during the COVID-19 crisis are those pointing out that various government restrictions on movement, assembly, the free conduct of legal business and other basic rights are fundamentally unconstitutional.

          What a week. What a time. Many in this building on Teichman Road have covered crises. Hurricane Rita and the calamitous evacuation that near-miss caused. The direct hit Hurricane Ike delivered and the night of terror and heroism that was Hurricane Harvey.

          Fred Rogers, aka television’s beloved Mr. Rogers, is often quoted as having said: “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’”

          Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s reluctance to issue a statewide shelter-in-place order is understandable, on one hand. On the other, and in context to what he and other leaders in state government were saying fairly recently, it’s amazing.
